150th Chicago Midwinter Meeting turns up the heat
by Guy Hiscott
The Chicago Dental Society’s (CDS) 150th Midwinter Meeting kicked off last week with impressive attendance.
More than 27,000 guests attended the conference, including dental professionals, graduate students and exhibitors.
Irish Dentistry flew over to check out the latest products and news in the world of dental implants, endodontics and aesthetic dentistry.
Digital dentistry appeared to be one of the stand-out topics at the meeting – not only with a vast number of lectures in the area, but the majority of exhibitors commenting on its astonishing rise.
‘We should be focusing on computer-aided design [CAD] now. In 20 years’ time, it will have progressed enormously,’ says Jacquelin Burns-Robertson, account representative of 3M.
Dentists are science driven – if the science proves itself, they will follow
Pondering whether we are anywhere near perfecting CAD in dentistry, Jacquelin points to improving techniques.
‘It depends on who gets it and who perfects it. Dentists are science driven – if the science proves itself, they will follow.’
Lectures and workshops
The CDS Midwinter Meeting is one of the largest exhibits of dental products in North America and one of Chicago’s top conventions and attractions for dentists.
This was no less proved than through lectures and workshops by some of the world’s top dental professionals.
Endodontist Lynne Brock’s two-part lecture on Friday 27 February discussed new dimensions in endodontics, demonstrating predictable long-term natural dentition as an alternative to implants.
With a background in all areas of dentistry, Dr Brock’s lecture provided a unique perspective on aspects of care and treatment in endodontics.
The rise of digital dentistry
Guests agreed that the evolution of digital dentistry is evident everywhere now.
Dentist and long-time attendee of the Midwinter Meeting Dr Mark Mkrdichian has seen a difference in the last 32 years.
‘It’s certainly changed tremendously in terms of the amount of technology, computers and lasers now available.’
The 151st Midwinter Meeting returns to Chicago on 25-27 February 2016.
