Mouth Cancer Awareness Day takes off

Hundreds of patients attended Irish dental practices last week (Wednesday 18 September) as part of Mouth Cancer Awareness Day.
The nationwide event, an initiative set up by the Irish Dental Association, is now into its third year.
It saw patients go to their local participating dental practice – or Cork University Dental School and Hospital – for free mouth cancer screening. Patients across the country have been urged to take 10 minutes out of their day for a simple check that could potentially save their lives.
More than 300 cases of mouth cancer are diagnosed in Ireland each year. Most of these cases are diagnosed at a late stage. Early detection improves the survival rate significantly.
Mouth Cancer Awareness Day has been a success since its inception, screening more than 18,000 patients and identifying more than 20 cases of oral cancer.
