Dental postgrad students showcase their work
by Guy Hiscott
Congratulations to dental postgraduate students Dr Lamyia Anweigi, Dr Cristiane Mata and Dr Richeal Ni Riordain, who presented their PhD research at University College Cork’s inaugural Doctoral Research Showcase, held in Devere Hall on 2 June.
Shortlisted from 175 College of Medicine & Health entrants, Cristiane’s 10-minute presentation on her thesis Providing dental care for older adults was first up.
Richeal then presented her research on Development and validation of a quality of life questionnaire for chronic oral mucosal diseases.
Taking part in the poster presentations segment of the day, finalist Lamyia introduced the audience to her work on determining the quality of life for patients with hypodontia.
The Showcase is a new initiative created to recognise the research achievements of UCC’s 1,200 doctoral research students, giving them the opportunity to communicate their research to a public, non-specialist audience, bridging the gap between academia and industry and other sectors of the economy.
UCC is the first Irish university to hold such an event comprising an oral presentation and poster category, and with prizes for the winner of each category.
