New regulations on dental radiography

by Guy Hiscott

Dental hygienists and dental nurses can take dental radiographs under new regulations.

Under the provisions of SI 303 of 2007, dental hygienists and dental nurses who are registered with the Dental Council and who have completed a Council-approved course in radiation protection and technique may take radiographs in the practice of dentistry under the supervision of a registered dentist.

The provisions restore the rights of dental hygienists and nurses that were removed in 2002. The one important change is that they must be registered with the Council before they can legally take radiographs.
